Abstract:
The study of the bio-ecology of hybrid sparrows carried out between 2020, 2021 and 2022 in the agricultural perimeters of the Bouira region shows a predominantly plant-based diet among adults (83.53%). Chicks, on the other hand, mainly consume animal prey (77.86%). Among adults, the seeds of Amaranthaceae (34.92%), Polygonaceae (19.24%) and Poaceae (14.25%) dominate. Among young, Coleoptera (33.03%), Orthoptera (22.93%) and Hymenoptera (11.93%) are the most represented. The diet varies according to the months of the year 2022. Among adults, plant diversity is higher in June (H' = 2.20) and January (1.86). In young animals, animal diversity reaches a maximum (H' = 2.61) at the beginning of development. The repletion index (Ir) also fluctuates: it is highest in June (1.39) and January (1.29), lowest in May (0.61), and maximum in chicks in the first days of life, before decreasing. Breeding of hybrid sparrows, extending from mid-March to mid-July 2021, occurred in three cycles, with clutches lasting 22 to 29 days. Each nest contained an average of 3.75 ± 0.43 eggs, of which 3.08 ± 1.46 hatched, corresponding to a hatching rate of 80.41%. In comparison, the Spanish sparrow presented two cycles between mid-March and the end of May 2021, with slightly longer clutches (29 to 30 days). The nests contained an average of 4.21 ± 0.85 eggs, of which 3.26 ± 1.14 hatched, corresponding to a hatching rate of 75.87%. Morphometric analysis reveals that during the 2022 breeding period, hybrid males intensify their search for prey (p = 0.018), accompanied by a beak lengthening from 1.36 to 1.43 cm. A similar trend is observed in females (1.32 to 1.40 cm; p = 0.033). Larger body dimensions distinguish males: body length (16.30 cm vs. 15.62 cm) and wingspan (24.89 cm vs. 23.39 cm). In the pre-reproductive phase, females display a better body condition (SMI: 25.50 ± 4.60) than in the reproductive period (22.83 ± 4.30), while that of males remains stable (25.80 ± 3.69). The behavioral study of hybrid sparrows (2020–2021) reveals that perching (Pr) and foraging (RA) are the main activities, followed by flying (V), water searching (BRE), and calling (Cr). Activity varies across months, being low in January–February with a decrease in foraging and grooming (T). In May-June, an increase in water-searching behavior is observed. November is characterized by high vocal activity, while April shows a peak in flight hunting (CV). Significant links are observed between climate and some activities: temperature influences grooming, while precipitation affects perching (p < 0.05). Habitat also contributes to behavioral variability and population dynamics.
